Hug a Herp Day
6/20/2026 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines, Mo.
Event Information
All critters need love, so come on out and hug a herp!
Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians, collectively known as "herptiles," or simply "herps." Herps in Missouri include snakes, turtles, lizards, frogs, toads and salamanders. You might think these animals are creepy, but that's probably due to a lack of positive experiences.
The staff at Prairie State Park invites you to learn more about these slimy and scaly critters and the good they do. During this free event, park representatives will dispel myths about reptiles and amphibians, while letting visitors see some of these animals up close and touch them if they’re so inclined. Not brave enough to touch a herp? Then you can make an amphibian or reptile craft to take home instead.
This program will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park nature center. There is no need to register, and all are welcome to attend.

Pet Restrictions at Prairie State Park
Due to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park, pets are not allowed on park trails, except for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Bison graze freely in the park, and this regulation protects both guests and their pets. Pets are welcome in the park’s campground and picnic area, but visitors must follow Missouri State Parks’ pet rules.
This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting guests with disabilities.
