Celestial Showers: Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing
8/15/2026 | Washington State Park | De Soto, MO.
Join us for a fun night under a starry sky to view the Perseid meteor shower and participate in various astronomy-related activities! Everyone is welcome at this free event, and there is no need to register.
Event Schedule:
At 6 p.m., meet park staff at Shelter #2 in the Big River Day-Use Area to check out cool displays and pamphlets about the meteor shower and other astronomy topics. Participate in celestial-themed games.
Then, around 7 p.m., transition to toasting marshmallows around a campfire. Make your own s'more and listen to star stories.
Finally, as the sky grows completely dark, disperse throughout the day-use area to view the meteor shower. We'll end the event at midnight.
Things to Bring:
You're welcome to bring viewing instruments such as telescopes and binoculars, but the shower will be visible with the naked eye. Lawn chairs, blankets, water and insect repellent are recommended.
