Campground Program: Frog Symphony

at St. Joe State Park

St. Joe State Park's campground programs are back!

Park staff will present an interpretive program in Campground 1 each weekend from June through October, with the exception of the third weekend in October. There will be a different topic each week. The July 18 program will take place at the playground (37.810344, -90.514049), while the other programs will take place at the amphitheater (37.809560, -90.515322).

Everyone is welcome at these free events. In the event of inclement weather, programs will be canceled. Check the park's Facebook page for updates.

Series Schedule:

June Programs

June 6: Frog Symphony, 8-9 p.m.

Discover the magical sounds of frogs and toads! Learn about the diversity of calls, and use fun items to re-create this symphony.

June 13: Nightjars, 8-9 P.M.

Did you know that a whip-poor-will or chuck-will’s-widow can repeat its melodic call over 100 times each night? Come learn more about these elusive yet talkative birds.

June 19: Little Armored One, 8-9 P.M.

Learn about the only North American mammal with bony armor -- and the expansion of its habitat.

June 20: Past from Trash, 8-9 P.M.

Ancient trash and other materials can be used to piece together the lives of people from the past. Become an archaeologist and learn how to uncover the past from trash!

June: 27: Furbearers, 8-9 P.M.

Furbearers shaped history and kept us alive! Join the naturalist as we explore the importance of these hairy critters.

July Programs

July 3: Fireflies,  8-9 P.M.

Join a naturalist to learn about these glowing insects that light up our night.

July 11: Glade Glow, 8-9 P.M.

Missouri’s miniature deserts are home to an animal that glows under ultraviolet light. Discover the reason for the glow and how it might help the creature survive.

July 18: Moths, 8-9 P.M.

Celebrate National Moth Week at the playground in Campground 1. Learn about moth identification and find out how to conduct your own moth survey!

July 25: Missouri's Fastest Lizard, 8-9 P.M.

Get your running shoes ready for this program about the eastern collared lizard. Learn more about this lizard, and see if you can outrun it.

August Programs

Aug. 1: Bottom Walker, 8-9 P.M.

Explore the life of a stinkpot, a terrible swimmer that must take a different approach in order to survive.

Aug. 8: Graceful Glider, 8-9 P.M.

Have you ever seen a southern flying squirrel? Come learn how to identify the calls of these secretive tree dwellers.

Aug. 15: Busy Beavers, 8-9 P.M.

Learn how one of the world’s largest rodents changed history and earned the title "ecosystem engineer."

Aug. 22: Mystery Marsupial, 8-9 P.M.

There is only one marsupial native to North America. Join us to learn more about it.

Aug. 29: Woodpeckers, 8-9 P.M.

Stop by as we discuss Missouri’s favorite drummers and how they fit into our ecosystem.

September Programs

Sept. 4: Dabble or Dive, 8-9 P.M. 

There are two main types of ducks: dabblers and divers. Join us as we practice identifying ducks by the way they eat, fly and look.

Sept. 5: Mountain Lions, 8-9 P.M.

Learn all about Missouri’s largest felines and how to identify them.

Sept. 12: Squirrels, 8-9 P.M.

Stop by as we discuss nature’s forgetful gardeners and how they fit into the ecosystem.

Sept. 19: Oh, Deer!, 7-8 P.M.

White-tailed deer are some of the most familiar animals in Missouri, but how much do you really know about them? Stop by to learn more.

Sept. 26: Hibernation Mania, 7-8 P.M.

Bears, bats, frogs, turtles, snakes and many more! Lots of animals hibernate, and they do so in different ways. Discover the different types of hibernation that animals use to survive.

October Programs

Oct. 3: Woolly Bear, 7-8 P.M.

This familiar fuzzy caterpillar once predicted the length of winter, but today it is known for its ability to withstand freezing temperatures.

Oct. 10: Cackles and Caws, 7-8 P.M.

Did you know that you can find some of the world’s smartest birds right here in the park? Find out which birds they are and what makes them so smart.

Oct. 17: Made for Scavenging, 7-8 P.M.

Learn about nature’s disease-prevention and cleanup crew during this interpretive program.

Oct. 30: Rodent Roundup, 6-7 P.M.

Discover the world of Missouri's native rodents. Learn how to identify different species, and grab a rodent scavenger hunt sheet to use over the weekend!

Oct. 31: Cave Creatures, 6-7 P.M.

Find out which organisms thrive underground and how they do it!
